Father Edward Joyce, C.PP.S. (1930-2011)

Fr. Edward Joyce, C.PP.S., 81, died on Saturday, October 22, 2011, in the infirmary at St. Charles Center in Carthagena, Ohio. He had been in failing health for some time.

Father Edward Joyce, C.PP.S, He was born on July 7, 1930, in Cleveland, to Peter and Loretta (Murphy) Joyce. He entered the Society in 1944 and was ordained on June 2, 1956.

After his ordination he was sent to Rome, where he received his licentiate in scripture at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum). He became an instructor at St. Charles Seminary in Carthagena, Ohio.

In 1964, Fr. Joyce was named a professor at Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind., which is sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. He also served the college as its director of development. After leaving Saint Joseph's College, Fr. Joyce made his home in Laguna Niguel, Calif. He moved to St. Charles Center earlier this year.

Fr. Joyce is survived by three sisters, Katherine Gedeon, Parma, Ohio; Loretta Bunevich, Cleveland; and Sheila (Edward) Richter, Port Angeles, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Joanne Joyce, Cleveland; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Fr. Joyce was a scholarly man who never grew tired of learning. A great reader, he retained nearly everything that he read. Fr. Joyce was also a great singer and loved sports both as a participant and fan. Health issues forced his early retirement.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, with Fr. Larry Hemmelgarn, C.PP.S., presiding and Fr. Ernest Ranly, C.PP.S., as homilist. Burial will follow in the Community cemetery.
